COM4PHA Project: Development of PHA-Based Materials for Packaging and Agricultural Applications

The COM4PHA project is a research initiative aimed at developing bio-based, biodegradable, and compostable materials (BBCMs) utilizing Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), with a focus on the PHBV copolymer. The project targets applications in cosmetics, food packaging, and agriculture.

Objectives of the project include:

  • Optimizing PHA synthesis processes using organic waste as feedstock.

  • Developing processing techniques such as hollow-body blown extrusion for bottle production and coating applications for paper substrates and agricultural mulch films.

  • Ensuring materials compatibility with existing manufacturing systems to facilitate integration.

The project is a collaboration between Venvirotech (project coordinator), ENPLAST (material validation), and AIMPLAS (development of new PHA formulations). Notably, AIMPLAS is a member of GO!PHA, the Global Organization for PHA, which promotes the use of renewable, compostable, and biodegradable materials. Funding is provided by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the EU's Next Generation program.

By focusing on these areas, COM4PHA aims to contribute to the advancement of sustainable materials and support the transition towards a circular economy.
