PHA writing instruments by Prodir

Thanks to the use of bio-based, biodegradable and non-toxic PHAs, Prodir is now setting new sustainability benchmarks for writing instruments. This writing instrument combines credible sustainability and genuinely high-quality design with as result a product with impressive communicative impact.

The material was developed by Prodir in close cooperation with the company Gruppo MAIP.

Skin exfoliant for peeling milk

P3HB is used a UV filter in this organic sunscreen. Biodegradable P3HB replaces plastic particles that are generally used in sunscreens as a UV filter. The product is made by Nafigate and commercially available.

In this application P3HB is used as a skin exfoliant for peeling milk. P3HB replaces toxic and harmful microplastic particles. The product is made by Nafigate and commercially available.

Closing Cap

A closing cap for aluminum tube packaging made from PHBH. This collaboration between Gruppo Maip and Tubettificio Favia is already commercially available.

Make-up packaging

PHBH packaging suitable for lipstick and eyeliner. A pilot collaboration between Gruppo Maip and Rimmel.

Straws

Strong and reusable PHB straws for hot & cold drinks and single or multiple use. The straws are available on the market under the brandname Restore. The straws are compostable and biodegrade naturally like a leaf.

Cutlery

Compostable and biodegradable PHB cutlery for single or multiple use. The cutlery is strong and reusable for hot & cold foods. Restore straws are already available on the market.

NPX Nitrate and Phosphate fixing balls

These PHA NPX BioBalls reduce NO3 and PO4 levels in aquatic environments, such as aquariums. This collaboration between ColorFabb and Gebrema B.V. is commercially available.

Interior panels and electronics

Light switch cover frames made from PHBH by Gruppo Maip and ABB. The light switch covers are commercially available.

Sunglasses

The matte black frame is made from Newlight’s AirCarbon-Resin, a PHB which replaces plastics. This eyewear is crafted in Italy and is regenerative, carbon-negative, and its carbon footprint is blockchain-tracked.

Cutlery

Cutlery that feels like plastic but is made from PHB AIRCARBON, a material made by PHA. The cutlery is smooth, and strong and is dishwasher safe, so it can be reused again and again.

Tote handbag

This tote handbag was made with PHB AirCarbon Leather to replace animal and synthetic leather. This carbon negative tote handbag is available on the market under the brandname Covalent.

Cups

Happy Cups provide festivals, events, and companies with reusable cups that are made from and colored with PHA-based colorants, which are produced from bio-based and renewable materials. By using PHA, the reusable cups are durable and washable, fossil-free, recyclable, and biodegradable.

Clutch handbag

This clutch handbag was made with PHB AirCarbon Leather to replace animal and synthetic leather. The carbon-negative and regenerative clutch handbag is available on the market under the brand name Covalent.

FDM 3D filament

PHA/PLA blend for FDM 3D printing filament. The added PHA makes the PLA grade tougher and less brittle than generic PLA grades in the market. This collaboration between ColorFabb and FKuR is commercially available. Click on the image to go to the product website.


Coffee capsules

The WWF coffee capsules are unique and carefully created using PHA and are both biodegradable and compostable. The entire capsule, including the lid and seal, will break down naturally without harming the environment and are produced exclusively using energy generated from wind, sun, hydropower, and biogas.

Cosmetic containers

Shellworks is making packaging containers with sustainable, truly compostable alternatives to plastic for cosmetics and beauty products. They make compostable cream containers, multi-purpose bottles to store supplements or coffee, and vial droppers.

Straws, Bags, and Films

BIOLO aims to replace single-use plastic and paper with high-performance, sustainable solutions. Using PHA, they make bags, films, and straws that can biodegrade in the backyard. Their straws stay sturdy and packaging can withstand the demands of fulfillment.
