Embracing Nature for a Sustainable Future

In a recent press release, the European Commission has taken a bold step forward with the Communication on Building the Future with Nature, proposing targeted actions that herald a new era of innovation and sustainability. This initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to creating a level playing field for bio-based products, which is essential for spurring research and investment in this vital sector.

The Commission’s goals to provide clarity on regulatory frameworks, reduce legislative fragmentation, and revise standards to boost market access and innovation are indeed commendable. Such measures are poised to catalyze the development of groundbreaking materials that not only resemble plastic in functionality but are crafted from organic by-products and are fully biodegradable.

“Top innovators are working on new materials that look and work like plastic, except they’re made of organic by-products. And fully biodegradable. Imagine what a full-scale deployment of such technology could mean – potentially solving the crisis we have with plastic pollution,” shares Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission.

This communication highlights a promising direction, showing how nature and technology can work together to promote a greener, more resilient world.
