GO!PHA position on the UN Treaty on Plastics

Plastics have had adverse effects on our environment, society, and health, with a staggering 85% of single-use plastic products ending up in landfills or as unregulated waste. It's time to transition from fossil-based and persistent materials to sustainable solutions.   To achieve our goal of reducing and ultimately eliminating harmful plastics worldwide, GO!PHA and its members strongly advocate for the inclusion of renewable, biodegradable, and compostable materials in the UN Global Plastics Treaty.

Our recommendations include:

1. Promoting the use of renewable carbon feedstocks instead of fossil carbon.

2. Designing materials for increased collection and recycling through improved waste management systems.

3. Encouraging the use of compostable materials to improve organic waste recycling.

4. Utilizing marine biodegradable materials to combat microplastic pollution.   We believe in the potential of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers, a natural and versatile material that offers all end-of-life options, from recycling to composting. Let's seize the opportunity to make a positive impact and accelerate the adoption of PHA and similar technologies worldwide.
